Bats
Bats are the discs which attach to the wheelhead of a potter's wheel (pottery wheel). These discs allow ware to be moved from the wheel as soon as it is thrown without damaging or deforming the pot.
Bats are made of plaster, wood products, or plastic. See descriptions below :
DURON BAT - Often called “Masonite” is 1/4 inch thick,
smooth on both sides, least expensive. These bats do
require care-- they must be stored dry and reversed with
each use to prevent warping.
MEDEX BAT- Wood product without formaldehyde.
Handles clay like wood or Duron. Water proof, no warping,
extremely strong. Will not degrade like particle board.
More expensive but PERMANENT.
INJECTION MOLDED PLASTIC BAT are considered less
susceptible to warping than other bats.
PRESSED WOOD BAT - Made of durable 3/4” pressboard.
They can be sealed with shellac or varnish for extra long
life. Available in 14” or 22” diameter.
Fits any wheel with 10” hole centers.
WONDERBATS are made from material that is extremely
water resistant, but is also porous, which performs similar
to plaster.
HYDROBATS - The Hydro-Bat is made of Hydro-Stone, a USG product containing cement and crystalline silica, that is 8 to 10 times stronger then pottery plaster. The surface is scratch resistant yet absorbs water like plaster eliminating the need to cut your pieces off the bat with a wire.
