Cobblestone Glaze
Cobblestone is a non-toxic textural glaze that forms a raised rectangular chip like texture when applied over another glaze. The fired surface will feel rough to the touch; its appearance is reminiscent of dried earth.
Snowfall Glaze
Snowfall is a dimension glaze that creates a white, textured surface. It is a non moving glaze and, as such, application methods (brushing, detailer bottle/slip trailer) have an impact on the fired result.

Cobblestone Features and Attributes
- Non-toxic, non-hazardous and food safe
Application Recommendations:
To achieve the cracked pattern (pictured above: Apply Cobblestones over any non-toxic glaze. While Cobblestones can be applied over a previously fired glaze the cracked pattern will become more pronounced if applied on an unfired glaze.
Shake for 5-6 seconds before use. Dispense glaze onto a palette (tile, plate, etc.) and apply 2 coats with a broad, soft brush, such as a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan Brush. Apply the second coat while the first coat is still damp: do not allow Cobblestone to dry between coats.
Pattern break-up is determined by the application direction of the brush stroke. Large break up heavier application, small breakup lighter application If application is too light the cobblestone will not break up. Reapplying and touching up will not achieve a break up Fire to shelf cone 06 or higher
COBBLESTONE USAGE VARIATIONS AND FAQ’S
Make Your Own Colors
SG-202 White Cobblestone can be tinted with glazes and stains.
This project features several Mayco Stroke & Coat glazes applied over the White Cobblestone.
Application Influences Pattern
Thinner applications produce smaller, subtle patterns while heavier, thicker application produce more pronounced effects.
2 light coats of SG-202 White Cobblestone were lightly applied over EL-119 Burnished Steel, producing smaller textured pattern pictured here.
Fine Line Details
Cobblestones can be applied with a detailer bottle or slip trailer.
In this project SG-202 Black Cobblestone is applied with AC-223 Large Writer Tip to create free-form lines.
Q: What conditions can influence the performance of Cobblestones?
A: Application thickness, drying time before firing, firing atmosphere and temperature can all affect the fired results you obtain.
Q: Any tips for handling ware with unfired, dried Cobblestones on it?
A: Handle the ware carefully as the dried Cobblestone has a tendency to flake off. Pieces of cobblestone that fall off may be reapplied to the ware using AC-302 Wax Resist If cobblestone flakes off and you reapply cobblestone in that area this area will have a different break up pattern A protective coating of AC-302 Wax Resist can be applied over the cobblestone while the cobblestone is still damp to help alleviate the flaking of the product
Q: How can I tint Cobblestones?
A: G-202 White Cobblestone can be tinted with One Stroke or Stroke & Coat. Darker pigment colors work best. Always do a test firing. Too much Stroke & Coat color added will lessen the break up pattern SG-202 White Cobblestone can be made into various colors by applying 1 coat of Stroke and Coat on top of the damp cobblestone.(heavy application of S&C can interfere with the break up).
Q: Are there any application situations I should avoid?
A: SG-201 Black Cobblestone will not break up over Matte glazes. If Black Cobblestone is desired on Mattes use SG-202 and apply 1 coat of SC-15 to achieve this effect.
Shake for 5-6 seconds before use. Dispensing the glaze onto a palette (tile, plate, etc.) - helps prevent against contamination of the contents in the jar.
Apply a minimum of 3 smooth even coats to properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque using a soft brush, such as a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan Brush. Try to get the brush fully saturated (loaded) and apply each coat in the same direction (helps prevent streaks from appearing in the fired finish). Fire to shelf cone 06.
Note: Application recommendations also apply to discontinued product SG-102 Green Chalkboard
SNOWFALL USAGE VARIATIONS AND FAQ’S
- Non-toxic
- Food safe; however not recommended for food surfaces due to surface characteristics
Snowfall Product Features and Attributes
Snowfall Application Recommendations:
Mix well. Apply 2 or more coats over unfired glazes, shelf cone 04 bisque (1060°C), greenware or clay. Can be applied with a brush or sponge. For dimensional effects, apply using a Writer Tip. Fire to shelf cone 06 (999°C) Apply with a soft brush or with a sponge Color SG-302 Snowfall by applying 1 coat of your favorite Stroke & Coat over the Snowfall Clear Brushing or Clear Dipping Glazes can be applied, if desired Can be used with AC-222 Medium Writer Tip or AC-223 Large Writer Tip A turquoise effect may result when applied over the following green glazes: S-2156 Evergreen Fir, S-2157 Holiday Green, S-2158 Green Sapphire, AG-226 Olive green, AG-400 Luster Green. Some other greens or copper based glazes may require testing Luster compatible Non-fired acrylic stains may be used over SG-302 Snowfall after firing for a different look Cone 6 Results: Can be fired to cone 6 with No Change to the glaze finish
Accent and Detail
Snowfall's texture can be used in so many way beyond "snowfall." This project features Snowfall as a whimiscal accent, creating dimension in this simple design.
Q: Your label states that Snowfall is "Food Safe", yet you also include the statement "May not be suitable for food surfaces due to surface characteristics"?
A: Food Safety is determined by standards established by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). ASTM method C-738 and C-927-80 are "leach tests"; the tests involve measuring the chemical composition of an acidic food before exposure to a glazed surface and the chemical composition after a several days. If the levels of glaze materials found in the food are below the established limits, the glaze can be marketed as "Food Safe."
Glazes that create dimensional surfaces also create crevices and nooks that can trap food - even after washing. This food can develop bacterial growth and cause health issues. Our policy is to discourage the use of textural glazes on ware that is intended for food usage even though the glaze has met all food safety criteria.
When used on top of other Snowfall maintains its position when used over products such as Stroke & Coats®. Snowfall can be used alone or for all over coverage as a background. Clear Brushing or Clear Dipping Glazes can be applied, if desired.
