Pottery Cascades™ are moving, flowing glazes that are commonly used above and beneath other glazes.  Cascades will intermingle with glazes with which they are combined and produce dynamic, blending and effects.

Pottery Cascades™ are commonly used by low-fire designers who seek to simulate effects of higher fire glazes.

With the disappearance of leaded glazes from the markets, Cascades have been used to create the flowing movement lead used to provide.

Product Features and Attributes

Application Recommendations:

Shake for 5-6 seconds before use. Dispense glaze onto a palette (tile, plate, etc.) and apply with your brush or decorating accessory of choice (sponge, stamp, etc.).  Dipping your brush directly into the jar could contaminate the jar's contents, especialy if you are using one brush to layer Pottery Cascades over other glazes.

We recommend that you do not apply Cascades to the lowest third of your piece as the glazes WILL move.  Vertical pieces require more attention to this detail than horizontal piecs.

Pottery Cascade glazes were designed to mature at a shelf cone 06 (999° C).  Make sure the glaze has dried thoroughly prior to firing. A medium ramp/firing rate is recommended (250°F per hour).

Notes:

  • PC-602 White Cascade moves less than PC-603 Amber Cascade and PC-604 Black Cascade;  PC-601 Clear Cascade will move the most and should not be applied below the halfway point on a vertical shape.

Q: What tips do you have for applying Pottery Cascade?
A: Apply PC-602 White Cascade, PC-603 Amber Cascade and PC-604 Black Cascade with a brush in 1-3 coats. Can be dabbed on at random, evenly or unevenly to create different flow patterns using a sea wool sponge, for example. PC-601 Clear Cascade should be brushed on as you would apply a glaze. Apply 1-2 brushed coats over or under a non-toxic glaze. Do not go below the halfway point of the piece, as the PC-601 Clear Cascade flows more. Pottery Cascades can be applied between color, underneath and over colors for different effects.

Other conditions that could affect the performance of Pottery Cascades include:

  • Can be applied between color, underneath and over colors for different effects.
  • Shape of the piece affects the performance of the glaze.
  • Firing temperature, ramp rate and a soaking period may enhance the flow patterns.
  • Avoid excess color toward the bottom of the piece to prevent drips from forming on the bottom of pieces.
  • Pottery Cascades are luster compatible.

Q: How do the "personalities" of each Pottery Cascade differ?
A: PC-602 White Cascade intermingles with the other glazes being used, introducing pure white to the colors you are using, blending with the color. PC-602 White Cascade has a minimum movement and will stay in the pattern that you apply it in. PC-603 Amber Cascade and PC-604 Black Cascade perform similar to the PC-602 White Cascade. PC-601 Clear Cascade produces a more flowing effect, and allows the color of the base glaze to show through. It can also alter your original color, creating a new color. It will form runs or you can direct the runs when you apply the product.

Q: Your label states that Crystalites™ and Jungle Gems™are "Food Sage", yet you also include the statement "May not be suitable for food surfaces due to surface characteristics"?
A: Food Safety is determined by standards established by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  ASTM method C-738 and C-927-80 are "leach tests"; the tests involve measuring the chemical composition of an acidic food before exposure to a glazed surface and the chemical composition after a several days.  If the levels of glaze materials found in the food are below the established limits, the glaze can be marketed as "Food Safe."

Glazes that create dimensional surfaces also create crevices and nooks that can trap food - even after washing.  This food can develop bacterial growth and cause health issues. Our policy is to discourage the use of textural glazes on ware that is intended for food usage even though the glaze has met all food safety criteria.

Q: Can Pottery Cascade be used by itself?
A: Yes, Pottery Cascades can be used alone.

Q: Are Pottery Cascades overglaze (luster) compatible?
A: Yes, but always test first before undertaking a major project.
