Glazes & Underglazes

Guide to Glaze & Underglaze selection

Which glaze or underglaze should you use?

Choosing a glaze can appear perplexing. In reality, there are only a few criteria you need to consider to make you selection less daunting.

  1. Your choice of glaze or underglaze depends primarily on the firing range of the clay of your piece --high fire (cone 8 - 10), mid fire( cone 5-6 )or low fire (cone 04-06 ) clay. Knowing your clay is the first step to decorating. Under normal circumstances all clays are bisque fired to cone 04 prior to glazing.
  2. Underglazes can be applied to the raw clay and to bisque in some instances. Most can be fired to cone 6 with some color variation from firing at cone 06.
  3. Glazes suited for cone 04/06 clay can sometimes be fired to cone 5/6 with interesting results. On the other hand, glazes suited for cone5/6 will usually not mature at cone 04/06
  4. What age group is using the product? Some glazes/underglazes are more suited to younger artists.
  5. What technique you are trying to achieve? there may be a commercial glaze is suited to your vision.
  6. Like learning computers, the art of decorating pottery is a circle. Jump in and follow one method until another peaks your ineterest. While learning one technique, another is usually closely related.
